William Morris Tour day 3

It is almost 11pm and a very weary group is back at home base after another amazing day. The itinerary was changed a little from last year's tours and instead of Birmingham Gallery we were treated to some antique textiles at the Hereford Museum Resource Centre. Sadly the centre's future is uncertain so we were certainly pleased to be able to see some treasures dating back to the 1600's.......

The resource room holds a massive compactus full of treasures in boxes and pull out drawers - from soldiers uniforms to parasols, embroidered garments, smocks and even wedding dresses.........

A few of us were constantly drawn towards the wall that had rolls hidden behind calico covers....and a little sneak peek revealed they were quilts!!!..........
But then back to the exquisite 17th and 18th century embroideries..........

Even purses which I discovered are called 'riticules'.........oops - dear Helen haas just informed me they are actually called 'reticules'! Helen also went on to tell me that Jane Austen used them, so with that I have done a search and you can see some more wonderful examples here

 Children's shoes............
 embroidered aprons..........

And then finally the quilts. First is a small piece of a hexagon quilt paper pieced on old letters............

And this was one of the highlights for me. A quilt made in 1697 and covered in an all over couched design and embroidered in the corners and centre - it was just stunning......

It was a privilege to be allowed so close where photos and questions were encouraged. I do hope more people visit and are made aware of this British treasure trove
Lunch was at Wightwick Manor with an interior full of William Morris. Sadly no photos are allowed inside but the outside never fails to impress.........

It was a welcome rest at Birmingham Cathedral where the Burne-Jones stained glass created a backdrop to the boys choir and evensong.......

The evening concluded with fine wine, great food and wonderful company...........
