William Morris in London

The days are going far too fast with only 3 days to go! Yesterday was a very long day as we travelled to London so blogging had to wait until tonight. First was our trip to the William Morris Society where we were treated to original drawings and samples all up close and personal.........

It was wonderful to see Year 5 student projects on display - this young man has a bright future - he designed his own Morris stencil block...amazing!........

This was followed by a great lunch at the Black Lion pub - owned by a New Zealander and staffed by Aussies!............
 Vicki shared lunch with Larry.......

Following lunch we viewed the house where May Morris lived - well the outside anyway!.......
and then next door we had a tour at the home of Emery Walker........

This was followed by a fascinating tour with a specialist guide at the Victoria and Albert Museum. I love the look on the guys face as Larry strategically placed Vicki on the stairs at the entrance.....we have had a lot of funny looks Vicki!!
 How appropriate...............
First stop is the incredible Ardabil carpet (1539), which William Morris told the museum to purchase. It is the biggest of its kind in the world and has 5,300 knots every 10cm square............

All of these textiles date back before 1700............

Over time our group finally find seats as standing for nearly 2 hours is quite tiring!........

Detail of the Tristan Quilt from 1360-1400...............
The Trojan War Tapestry is incredible and if you click on the link there is an informative video......

Those who have done the felted wool quilt block holder class will recognise this design.............
and then we finally see some William Morris including the rich Bullerswood carpet........

Today was a very welcome 'rest' day where we stayed in the hotel and stitched and nattered. This year it is a small Victorian pinwheel with Morris birds. It is wonderful that participants can actually complete something to take home as a memento..........

Tomorrow is another long day as we visit Red House and Oxford. More of that in a day or two but for now a sweet reminder of home....this little man is growing up way too fast but it is nice to see he is finally getting some hair!
