A very long day

We drove for 8 hours today with two very short breaks and finally arrived in Charleville. It will be up to Larry to explore the region and take some photos for us all as I'll be busy for the next two days with Charleville Quilters! The landscape changed the further north we drove and it has also warmed up a little.....12C at 9.30 but expecting a lovely warm day of 20C tomorrow........

Roadworks always slow one down but we are forever grateful for the upgrades that are being done.......
.and we saw more of that stunning red earth that is so often found in the outback.........
Not snow but cotton on the side of the road.......
We had a coffee break at Bourke and again found some lovely historic buildings.......

Alway a bonus at a loo stop to have some soap......thankyou Back of Bourke! I have wondered why it is often referred to as 'Back of Bourke' and found in the Urban Dictionary it is Aussie slang for a town in the middle of nowhere....and I guess it is! We had a lovely coffee with the very noisy corellas overhead......

Not our car but it has clearly seen some of that red dirt.......
The Darling River is looked very muddy.........

Our very quick lunch stop with a petrol top up and look at that amazing dirt........
The road kill continued in the hundreds and we had to slow down many times to avoid the wildlife and the corpses on the road. But I no longer feel as sad about it all as Sue and Jude reminded me of the devastation that the emus and kangaroos can do to farming land.........

Sue also told me how the emus flatten the fencing and there was evidence of this with these sheep on the side of the road.........
and just for you Karen.....we saw some cactus plants!..........

This is our lovely home for the next three nights and what a choice of beds! It is a new motel in town - The Rocks Motel..........

So more news soon........hope all is well wherever you are x

  3. :) love the cactus's! all that red dirt reminds me of portions of the American West. I think you have a lot more road kill then we see when we travel, you must be infested with kangaroo and emu's. I think Larry will probably need to get the car washed while you are quilting. Thanks for sharing your travels - you are taking a different drive home I imagine so you don't need to go over the same route?

  4. On the Road Again could be your present day theme song it seems. I thought our road kill bad with seeing the occasional skunk or raccoon but all those poor creatures. But as you say, they can cause destruction even the rather exotic(to me) emu apparently. Meanwhile thanks for sharing your photos; always interesting to see the different terrain and birds, etc. Good luck with your workshops.

  5. Hi Michele--just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your pictures and descriptions of your Australia trips. My husband and I have been there four times, and we plan to return on a regular basis. Your posts are making me want to go back sooner than we have planned. The hotel looks lovely! Good luck with the workshops!

    1. Thankyou Carol! I am so sorry I don't have your email address to reply to you direct. If ever you do come back remember to put Adelaide on your list so I can take you to see some Morris sights!
