A long drive

Well we've been on the road for two days travelling over 1,070 kms with one more day to go before we reach my first teaching destination. We know others travel more than that in one day but we find 6-7 hours sitting in the car is enough! We left home early yesterday morning with an uneventful journey arriving for the night in Balranald where I had the most amazing schnitzel and veggies covered in garlic sauce at the local pub.  Early in the day was was quite foggy and wet……...

And then we hit the Mallee and came to realise how much they have missed out on desperately needed rain. The fog here is in fact dust……...

It is always a must to see what the local bakeries produce!…..
And a quick drive past the original home of our dear friends Faye and Kym who are currently living it up on the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada! (hi guys xx)…..

This tourist bus was stationed at our hotel last night and the picture on the back of the bus is on our agenda next week where we hope to see some William Morris windows - Newcastle Cathedral……….

Much of our drive is incredibly boring especially across the 2-3 long hours of "nothingness" across the Hay plain. So a few views along the way firstly here in the town of Hay with a truck passing through loaded with cotton.………

Many army vehicles passed us along the way……...
And when I am not driving it is time to cut some more appliqué…..pretty colours this time………….

 finally some vegetation……...
We were shocked that we found nowhere to eat between Hay and West Wyalong - a distance of 250 kms, apart from a tiny general store at Rankins Springs that offered a toastie or a pie - we were so glad we could give her some business! It is so sad to see so many towns abandoned……...

Not so sure about the motel though……...

One wonders how long he has been walking on the road - bed and all……...
Sadly cars and kangaroos don't mix…….
A quick visit to West Wyalong, Forbes and tonight a night in Parkes……..

And what is Parkes known for?…….well the website tells me an annual Elvis Presley festival and a radio telescope know as "the dish'. A mosaic greeted us in the entrance of our hotel aptly named 'Gracelands' so more of that tomorrow…….

  1. Elvis is know there too huh. He lived Memphis, Tennessee about 3 1/2 hours from us - we have seen his Graceland home from a distance driving by but have never taken the tour. So you have people who live on the road too - interesting to see them pushing or carrying all their belongings one wonders why they do that - sad. Have a good week of workshops and another good drive home, do you need to go exactly the same way back or do you see new scenery?

  2. How interesting to see your country through these photos. Instead of kangaroos we sadly have deer that meet a similar fate. I guess Elvis is a bit like Morris...he is renown all over the world. LOL

  3. Your photo show how vast Australia is. It is the same driving West although it's dryer still as we have desert. Praying for rain for those who need it.
