Desperate Romantics at last!

John Millais (Samuel Barnett), Fred Walters (Sam Crane) Dante Gabriel Rossetti (Aidan Turner) and William Holman Hunt (Rafe Spall) are Desperate Romantics

AT LAST!!! The BBC production of Desperate Romantics starts here on Sunday night on ABC1 at 8.30pm and then for the next two Sundays. I don't think Morris appears until midway and towards the end.........but you know what I will be doing for the next three Sundays! There are a few trailers here:

  5. Hi Michele - I have just spent a wonderful morning with you! I am an American weaver and quilter who is living in London for 6 months.
I too got hooked by Wm Morris at the V and A exhibit in the late 90's. I was there for the day - alone! - on Saturday and I spent an hour just in the bookstore where I found your Applique book. I read the whole thing this morning. Your technique illustrations are excellent and the whole book is so inspiring and well done!!! Congratulations and thank you.

I feel very privileged to have been able to get to all of the houses in the past two years. I have the first wall paper he designed - trellis - in my sun room at home and I live with his principles in my home as much as I can.

When I found out we were going to be over here for Christmas I packed one Christmas decoration - the Adoration of the Magi tapestry you have on p 115 of your book. My reproduction is only 73 X 122 cm but it was perfect for bringing Christimas into our entire little house here for this year.

I bought the reproduction tapestry when we were here two years ago. We lived in Wimbledon then and I was able to go walk by the river Wandle in the area where the Merton Abbey Mills were where Morris and Co had their production studios for many years.

That same year I had a friend come visit for a few weeks and we went to Oxford for a visit. We stayed in one of the colleges (it was summer) and went to an early music candle light concert at Exeter college. As the sun set and I began to notice what you could see by candle-light I realized that the original of the Adoration of the Magi was on the wall across from where I was sitting!!

I could hardly wait for the intermission to go see it and I must confess that I was not able to pay much attention to the music after that. It is huge - the figures must be life sized. I am so in awe of the work they did and how inspired they were.

When I go to the V and A I first have coffee and sit in the Wm Morris rooms of the dining area for at least an hour just looking at the tile and stained glass.

I did read every word of your book except for a little bit of the technique explanations. I have been weaving and quilting for over 40 years and the only thing I am not much experienced at is applique. I have done all of the fusing and machine applique techniques etc. but I am hoping to do your bird hanging to complement my lattice wallpaper at home.

I did actually bring my sewing machine to London - I could not imagine being away from it for 6 months! My stash is at home - I brought a limited amount of fabric - but I am going home for a month in May and returning for several more months so I hope to be able to gather fabrics then and complete the hanging by fall.

YOU have inspired me greatly - as well as many others as I can see by your blog.

We are blessed to be able to let this side of our lives flourish and I am thankful for the time you have put into this book.

    Keep on!

    Thank you,
    Pat
